The Purpose of the Church #1

The Purpose of the Church:Evangelism

Intro:

The five-fold purpose of the Church: evangelism, discipleship, worship, ministry, and fellowship.

The first purpose of the Church that we will look at is evangelism.  God views evangelism as an essential aspect of the purpose of the Church.  The Lord commanded that His followers not only live His message, but share His message with those who do not belong to Him.

The book of Acts is a history of the 1st Century Church, and the main re-occurring theme is the dutiful proclamation of the gospel to the lost.  The result was that God added to the Church daily those that should be saved.

I)                   The mission of the Church

1.      Matthew 28:19-20 – make disciples

2.      Acts 1:7-8 – go everywhere

3.      Romans 1:16 – don’t be ashamed of the gospel, it is what saves people

4.      Acts 26:18 – to help open the eyes of the unsaved

5.      Colossians 4:2-6 – pray for open doors to proclaim the gospel

6.      Matthew 5:13-16 – be a bright shining light for Christ

II)                 The prerequisite (a good testimony before people and God)

1.      Philippians 2:15 – be a good testimony

2.      1 Peter 2:12, 15 – be above accusation

3.      2 Timothy 2:10 – suffer so that people can know the gospel and accept Christ

4.      Acts 2:46-47 – have favor with all people (godly behavior)

5.      Ephesians 5:1 – imitate God

III)              The message to proclaim

1.      2 Corinthians 5:17-21 – Christ brings new life, we are His ambassadors appealing to men on His behalf to be reconciled to God through Him

2.      Acts 2:36-38 – repent and receive forgiveness of sins through Jesus, He is the Messiah

3.      Acts 4:10-12 – there is salvation in no one else

IV)              God’s statements about lost people

1.      2 Peter 3:9 – God does not want anyone to perish, but to come to repentance

2.      1 Timothy 2:3-6 – God desires all men to be saved through the only mediator His Son, who gave Himself for them

3.      1 Timothy 4:10 – Jesus is the Savior of all men, especially believers

4.      1 John 2:2 – Jesus is the propitiation for the sins of the whole world

5.      John 3:16 – God loved the world by giving His Son to save all that would believe in Him

6.      Titus 2:11-15 – God’s grace has appeared in His Son, to bring salvation to all men

Conclusion:

1)      The mission of the Church

2)      The prerequisite – a good testimony

3)      The message

4)      God’s statements about lost people

The first purpose of the Church of Jesus Christ is to evangelize this world.  We are to take the good news of Jesus to everyone that we come into contact with.

It is clear that evangelism is one of the purposes that God has saved us to fulfill.
