God’s Instruction for Marriage, Family, and Work

Ephesians 5:22-33; 6:1-9

         How is your marriage?  How is it really?  God knows what is happening.  He has an answer for you today in His Word.

         How are your kids doing?  How is your relationship with your boss?  God has answers for you today in His Word? 

I)                   God’s desire for marriage (5:22-33)

a.      The Standard (22-31)

                                                               i.      Instruction for the wife (22-24)

1.      As you submit to the Lord, submit to your husband as your spiritual leader (22)

2.      The husband is the head of the wife, as Christ is the head of the Church, and its Savior (23)

3.      Submit to your husband in everything, like the Church submits to Christ in everything (24)

a.       1 Cor. 11:3-16; 1 Cor. 14:34-35

b.      In reference to an unsaved spouse – 1 Peter 3:1-6

                                                             ii.      Instruction for the husband (25-31)

1.      Husbands love your wives like Christ loved the Church and died for her (25)

2.      Setting the Church apart, cleansing her of sin (26)

a.       John 3:5; 15:3; Titus 3:5; James 1:18; 1 Peter 1:23; 3:21

3.      To present the Church to Himself glorious, without sin, or blame, or imperfection (27)

4.      Husbands love your wives, as you love yourself (28)

a.       1 Peter 3:7 – give honor to your wife, as unto a weaker vessel – physically

5.      No one ever hated his own body, but takes care of it, just like Jesus takes care of the Church (29)

6.      He takes care of us, because we are His body, through His shed blood (30)

7.      Husband and wife are one flesh in God’s eyes (31)

b.      The summary (32-33)

                                                               i.      Christ and the Church (32)

1.      They are one

                                                             ii.      Husbands love your wives, wives respect/submit to your husbands (33)

1.      It is a command

II)                 God’s desire for the family, and the workplace (6:1-9)

a.      Instruction for the home (1-4)

                                                               i.      Instruction for the kiddies (1-3)

1.      Obey your parents (1)

2.      The Law says, honor your parents (2)

3.      As a result of honoring your parents, God will bless you, and you will live longer (3)

                                                             ii.      Instruction for Dads (4)

1.      Be consistent (do not frustrate them), teach them God’s Word

a.       Don’t know where to start, read Proverbs (especially chs. 1-9)

2.      Dads, you are the head of the household, you are held most accountable, and responsible for teaching your children in the fear and admonition of the Lord

b.      Instruction for the workplace (5-9)

                                                               i.      Instruction for slaves/workers (5-8)

1.      Obey them like you would obey Jesus (5)

2.      Don’t do it outwardly, just in front of men, to please them, but inwardly also, serving and obeying Christ (6)

3.      Willingly do this, you are serving God as a result (7)

4.      God blesses obedience (8)

                                                             ii.      Instruction for masters/bosses (9)

1.      Treat your workers properly, God doesn’t care how much money or power you have, He will judge your sin also


         If you are a born-again child of God, are you obeying God’s commandments for marriage?

         Are you children obeying your parents?  See it does affect your life.  Are you fathers raising your children properly, as Christ commanded?

         Are you obeying your boss like you would obey God, or do you talk behind your boss’s back?  If you are a boss, treat your workers properly, God doesn’t care who you think you are.
