God’s Instruction for a Personal Walk with Christ – Ephesians 5

God’s Instruction for Personal Walk with Christ

Ephesians 5:1-21

Intro:

         God’s blessings (Eph. 1:1-23)

Our new spiritual condition in Christ (Eph. 2:1-22)

God’s plan and desire for us in Christ (Eph. 3:1-21)

The body of Christ (Eph. 4:1-32)

How is your life going?  I mean honestly.  Are you free or are you in bondage to sin?  If you are in bondage to sin, you are in bondage to guilt and shame.  You are at this moment serving Satan, and he has footholds in your life.  Christ has given you victory in His precious blood, as a born again child of God, will you claim victory through Christ’s blood, and in Jesus’ name and authority smash down and remove Satan’s strongholds in your life through prayer, and re-dedicate those areas of your life to Christ today?

I)                   Walk as children of Light (5:1-21)

a.      What Would Jesus Do? (1-2)

                                                               i.      Imitate your Father (God) (1)

ii.      Christ gave His life to pay for your freedom from sin (2)

b.      Avoid sin, expose it for the evil it is by obeying God (3-14)

                                                               i.      As Christians sin shouldn’t characterize us (3-4)

1.      God’s children should live righteously (3)– 1 Peter 2:12, 15

2.      Righteous speech (4) – Col. 3:8-9

ii.      Sin will be judged, do God’s will (5-10)

1.      Unsaved, unchanged people will not be in heaven (5)

2.      Don’t have any part in unsaved peoples disobedience (6-7)

3.      Obey God, test things against God’s Word, to know if it is sin (8-10) – Romans 14:22 – “approves” – tested by the Word of God

iii.      Christians obeying God exposes sin (11-14)

1.      Don’t commit deeds of darkness (11)

2.      Don’t dwell on deeds of darkness by talking about them to others (12)

3.      God’s righteousness removes darkness (13)

a.       God’s Word – Psalm 119:105 – light

b.      Christ – John 8:12 – Light of the world

c.       Christians –Matt. 5:13; Phil. 2:15 – we are lights in the world

c.      Praise God with your words and actions (15-21)

                                                               i.      “Buy up” the opportunities to do God’s will (15-17)

1.      Be careful how you live (15)

2.      Make the most of your time, it is an evil time now (16)

3.      Do what God wants you to do (17)

ii.      Be filled with the Holy Spirit, praise God the Father for your salvation in Christ (18-21)

1.      Be filled with the Holy Spirit to do God’s will, as opposed to being filled with alcohol doing your own will (18)

2.      Speak with God’s Word, and songs (19)

3.      Praise God the Father (20)

4.      Be humble and submissive, obeying Christ (21)

Conclusion:

God wants us to live in obedience to His commandments, and glorify Him.  If you haven’t asked God to forgive your sins, and accepted Jesus Christ as the One and only payment for your sins, you have disobeyed God (1 John 3:23).   This is the only sin that will send you to hell.
